Play Ball, Lake Bluff!

One of the surest signs of summer in Lake Bluff–right up there with the parade, Farmer’s Market and the ice cream truck that keeps playing the same melody—is the Park District’s co-ed softball league. Games are played at Artesian Park from June to September on Tuesday and Thursday nights, even in the rain. Pitches are high arc, games are one hour, and laughter is the best medicine for sore knees, aching backs and balls that fall just shy of the glove.

“It’s so popular that 10 of the teams have registered for the league on the first day of registration for years. This year it was all 11,” said LBPD Executive Director Ron Salski. About 250 people participate, many since the league began about 20 years ago.

GazeboNews’ new staff photographer, Cyn Sansing Mycoskie, shot these photos at Tuesday night’s game between James Tavern and The Stinkers.

Floating An Idea For A Good Cause

If you love outdoor movies, floating on rafts and supporting a good cause, this event's for you: "Flick and Float," which takes place 8 to 10 p.m. on Aug. 1 at the Lake Bluff pool (or Aug. 8 if it's raining on the 1st). For $5 dollars you can float on rafts in the pool while watching "Kung Fu Panda" on a large screen TV that's set up poolside. The event is organized by Drew Paxson, a Lake Bluff life guard and soon-to-be sophomore at Ripon College in Wisconsin who wanted to do something to raise money for Camouflage Kids, a non-profit organization that purchases college athletic event tickets for the families and kids of U.S. military personnel. You can purchase Camouflage Kids T-shirts for $10. Proceeds from "Flick and Float" will go to Camouflage Kids.

Sailing Scrapbook

Here are some photos of Friday’s North Shore Cup, shot just a few feet from all the action. The race is a junior sailing regatta hosted by Lake Forest Sailing, and it drew about 80 sailors from Milwaukee to Chicago. The kids competed in Lasers, 420s and Optis in conditions that included warm temps, hazy skies and choppy water. Lake Forest’s Hunter Johnstone and Katie Hall won the 420 class series and Spence Cook won one race in the Opti series.
A huge thanks to Sailing Director Joey Harris for inviting GazeboNews Editor Adrienne Fawcett to shoot the race from a crash boat piloted by Ryan Hill.

District 65 Explores LFHS West For Start Date

The Lake Bluff School Board on Tuesday discussed two new scenarios for the start of the school year, one of which includes students in fourth and fifth grades starting at the Lake Forest High School West campus on Waukegan Road while K-3 begins the school year at East School.

Along with parents and children, the District would prefer to start school on Sept. 8 at the new Lake Bluff Elementary School, which is possible but a long shot. In lieu of that, the District has been working on contingency plans. Initially, the contingency plan placed fourth and fifth graders (including multi-age) at Christ Church on Waukegan Road in Lake Forest. But on Tuesday, District 65 Superintendent John Asplund learned space had opened up at the West campus after a tenant currently leasing the 2nd floor of that building decided it did not need as many rooms. The tenant is the Special Education District of Lake County.

LBES Principal Katie Williams described the West campus as a best-case scenario. "Life has been interesting thinking about these contingency plans," she told the School Board. "The staff and community have been understanding and supportive throughout this process, because we all hope to start at Lake Bluff Elementary. But we will start a great school year no matter where we are. After touring (the West Campus), it is 10 classes. There is a gym, and Tammy will be at the entrance for security. There are some small rooms and space for lunch. And there is recess green space also. All and all it is wonderful." She also said the building is wireless, equipped with white boards and has a separate entry for the District 65 kids.

Deadline For LF Day Parade Entries Is Today!

Thursday is the last day to get your entry in for the Lake Forest Day Parade, which takes place the morning of Aug. 5 (the carnival begins the night of Aug. 4). The parade includes a few changes due to Western Avenue being a construction zone, and while you don't exactly have to plan a skinny float, you should be mindful that the staging area is in a new, much more narrow spot this year.

"That's my main concern, that we have less staging room this year," said Parade Chairman Vinnie Dolan of American Legion Post 264, which sponsors Lake Forest Day. "It's going to be OK–we'll make it work. We'll just have to maneuver people differently."

In previous years, the parade's staging area was held on the north end of downtown near the Grille on Laurel. This year, it's being held south of downtown on Western Avenue between Vine Street and Ryan Lane. CVC, Egg Harbor and other businesses will be open during the staging, and Chiefs Pub has offered to act as a cooling station for parade marchers who get over-heated. Another change is the drop-off time. Mr. Dolan said people used to drop their entries off the night before the parade or as early at 7 a.m. the day of—that's not possible this year. "The staging starts at 9 a.m. and you need to come at 9 a.m.," he said, because Western will be open to traffic prior to that. The parade will start at 10 a.m. at Vine, proceed north on Western to Westminster, west on Westminster to Summit and right to the carnival at West Park.

Ramesh Kanapareddy, assistant cityengineer, said the City has been in close talks with the police and parade planners to ensure a safe route. "Traffic will be controlled with our police force and Legion volunteers. Motorists are being notified, signs are already up about the parade date and the streets that are to be closed. The only problem we foresee is the weather! We are praying for a pleasant forecast."

Mom Raising Funds For Fox Mascot

Fox mascot Lake Bluff's Holli Volkert is raising money to purchase a fox mascot costume for the new elementary school. She's trying to keep it a surprise, so don't tell the kids. She's got $215 so far, and she needs $850 for the costume shown in this photo.

"I have received lots of positive responses, but it being summer I'm sure it gets shuffled in the mix of to-dos," she said. "If you're wanting to donate and haven't done so yet, we are getting down to the wire to have it ordered and here on time for the first day in the new school." She pointed out that the fox won't be used in the temporary placement locations.

If you want to help, drop off or mail cash or a check for whatever amount you can give to Holli at 108 E. North Avenue, Lake Bluff. Make checks out to her or the LB PTO.

Picture Perfect

Linda Brodson has been shopping at Amidei Mercantino for years, but it wasn't until recently that she was inspired to do something more than just shop for fruit and flowers at the produce stand in Lake Forest. She decided to paint the fruit and flowers.

On Monday afternoon, Ms. Brodson and Laurie Lieberman parked their lawn chairs and painting arsenal in front of Amidei's alley and set to work painting bouquets of gladiolas and roses mixed with baby's breath. The two friends live in Highland Park. They looked so peaceful and quiet on this traffic-snarled afternoon, GazeboNews felt compelled to stop, chat and take this photo (Ms. Brodson is on the right). When they're not painting, Ms. Lieberman is an interior designer and Ms. Brodson runs Art Wear Unlimited, a business that sells one-of-a-kind wearable art such as clothing, accessories and jewelry. She has a show coming up Oct. 21-23 in Highland Park–e-mail her at linda@brodson.com if you'd like more information.

West-Side Traffic Meeting Is Tuesday Night

If you're following the affordable housing/traffic situation in Lake Forest, you might want to attend an informational meeting Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Forest High School West Campus. This is the first of two meetings on the subject—the next one is on Sept. 10, same time, same place. City staff and consultants will present preliminary findings of the traffic congestion and drainage studies that they  conducted earlier this year. Call 847-810-3507 for more info.

Feline It’s Time To Find A Home…

Remember the mother cat and kittens found nesting in a window well of the Lake Forest Library this spring? All have found homes, thanks to the efforts of the library staff and Trish Randall, who runs a Lake County cat-rescue organization. Ms. Randall has another cat family she's looking to place–a mother with a resilient spirit and two of her kittens. Here they are in this photo, Feona, Midge and Ariell. And here's their story, as told by Ms. Randall:

"Feona was rescued in November from the streets of Chicago after a threatened poisoning. Since then, she has survived so much and has a wonderful story of triumph and survival, including being shot with a BB gun, losing all of her teeth except three, and giving a surprise birth to kittens after arriving at my rescue. I am hoping to place Feona with either one or both of her kittens, as she loves them deeply and they really bring out the best in her. Midge and Ariell are playful, friendly and snuggly kittens that balance out Feona's timid and quiet side. Feona has tested positive for FIV, while her kittens
have long cleared their snap tests after a series of three of them.
That's why I have kept them for so long. It's fine to keep Feona with her offspring, as the only way to transmit FIV is through a bite wound, and not only does she pose no aggression risk to her kittens, she only has three teeth!" Interested in helping these felines find a home? Contact Ms. Randall at t-randall@sbcglobal.net or visit www.catster.com for more info and photos.

Finn And here's what Ms. Randall said about the window-well kittens rescued from the library:

"They are all doing great and have been receiving the best care possible … They have all been adopted, all to homes with each other or homes with other animals, so they will never be lost or alone again! The mom, now named 'Ella,' actually got adopted with both of her daughters, which is super."

Feona and two of her kittens are looking for homes. The fellow at left has already found one.

Park District Looking To Fill Foundation Board

The Lake Bluff Park District is looking to fill two vacant seats on its Foundation Board. This is not an elected position—it's appointed by the Park Board–and you don't have to live in Lake Bluff to serve.

LBPD director Ron Salski described this group as a non-profit fund-raising board that has been in existence since 2005. The Foundation Board of Trustees meets formally at least four times per year. If you're interested in one of these spots, you can get an application and information packet at the Rec center beginning Aug. 1. It must be returned to Mr. Salski's attention by Aug. 21. Want more details? Contact Mr. Salski at 847-234-4150.
