LF/LB Trick Or Treat Primer

The costume has been masterfully designed (or purchased). The candy bowl is full (sort of), and the doorbell is in working order. The only thing left to do is take the kids trick or treating on Halloween. But when? Here's what's going on in Lake Bluff and Lake Forest on Saturday, Oct. 31. Official trick-or-treat hours on Halloween:

  • Lake Forest–4 to 8 p.m.
  • Lake Bluff–4 to 7 p.m..

Also in Lake Bluff:

  • LBPD staff and their families will man the grills for the annual hot dog roast from 4 to 7 p.m. behind the Public Safety Building. Don't delay, as the dogs are limited. They'll also provide chips and refreshments. Visit the police department's website for the official invitation.
  • The Village Market will be tasting wine as usual from 1 to 4 p.m. on Oct. 31, with Richard from Pure Wine Co. offering "ghoulishly great wines at frighteningly fair prices." If you wear a costume or what appears to be a costume, you get a 10% discount on all wine purchased all day. This is not a trick!
  • Inovasi is offering free dinner for kids 12 and under
  • Noodle Bar is providing trick or treating and hot chocolate for kids, and spooky libations for grownups at the Latitude Lounge, 5 p.m. to midnight.

Also in Lake Forest:

  • Lake Forest Sailing's Halloween Spectacular Regatta is on Saturday, Oct. 31, and Sunday, Nov. 1, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the beach. Junior sailors aged 12 to 18 will race fleets that include Lasers, Laser Radials, Optimist and two divisions of 420 for high school teams. The event will include taffy apple dipping, a pumpkin carving contest and awards for the best costumes. Call 847-615-4592 or visit www.lfrec.com.
  • The Rec Center had its big Halloween bash for preschoolers through third graders last Sunday. The kids ate treats, played games, made crafty projects and summoned up the courage to tour of a haunted house.

County Already Out Of H1N1 Vaccine

The Lake County Health Department depleted its first supply of H1N1 vaccine on Thursday. It continued to vaccinate residents on Friday, but only those people who previously received a wrist ban from the county's five walk-in clinic sites. The clinics had enough vaccine for 10,000 residents and 2,600 healthcare workers, which is more vaccine than the department has provided in an entire flu season.

Meanwhile, the Health Department reported a third Lake County death from H1N1 complications. An 80-year-old woman from Long Grove died on Oct. 28; she had other medical conditions that made her vulnerable to the virus.

Readers: If you learn of a pharmacy, hospital, medical practice or other source that has—or gets–the seasonal flu vaccine or H1N1 vaccine, please comment on this story or send an e-mail to Adrienne@GazeboNews.com so that we can work together to keep the community informed.  One reader said the "Minute Clinic" at CVS on Western is expected to have a new supply of seasonal flu vaccine by Oct. 30. Check CVS.com for updates on that. More than 430 Lake County providers registered to receive H1N1 vaccine from the U.S. government, and the supply is expected to arrive sometime in November or December—although in the case of the County Health Department, the first shipment was a fraction of what it ordered.

His Next Rocket Is Out Of This World

Tim Phillips-1 A few years ago, Timothy Phillips was working on robots in the Lake Forest High School science department and launching rockets around Lake Bluff with Boy Scout Troop 42. Now he's a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force who during his senior year served as head engineer on an $11 million satellite that's going to be sent into outer space next spring.

The satellite is known as the FalconSAT-5 and is scheduled to launch from the Kodiak Launch Complex in Alaska on May 29, 2010. FalconSAT is one of the Air Force Academy's capstone undergraduate systems engineering courses. Second Lieutenant Phillips and his team began working on the satellite three years ago and completed key design, engineering and prototype testing milestones during the 2008-09 academic year. The class of 2010 is completing assembly of the satellite and preparing for system testing before the launch next spring.

"This is really a big thing," said his dad, Gerry Phillips of Lake Bluff. He sent GazeboNews a link to an article about the Falcon SAT-5, with the goal of encouraging students like his son (click here to read the article). "Right about now, kids in high school and Scouts start questioning whether what they are doing is meaningful," he said. "Hopefully, this will spur them to stick with a club and/or program or better yet, join one."

Halloween Is Turkey Time, Too

When GazeboNews photographer Cyn Sansing Mycoskie went out to shoot images of Halloween decor this week, she found more than resin pumpkins and ghosts made of flimsy white sheets. She happened on a real, picture-perfect turkey. He was ambling along Arbor Drive in Lake Bluff, and though she was excited to see him, he was not too keen on her; he ran from the front of her car to the back, never taking his eyes off her, as if he was escorting her away from his flock. Compared to this tom, even the witches and skeletons look friendly!

Gurnee Woman’s Death Linked To H1N1

By Adrienne Fawcett

A 41-year-old woman from Gurnee died on Oct. 23 from complications due to the H1N1 flu virus, according to the Lake County Health Department, which also said the woman had significant medical conditions that increased her vulnerability. In June, an elderly man, also from Gurnee, died from H1N1 complications.

The County will open five H1N1 vaccination clinics for high-priority groups on Thursday, Oct. 29 (none of the clinics are in Lake Forest or Lake Bluff). The vaccine supplies arrived on Oct. 26 and are limited because the County received just 12,600 of the 50,000 doses it ordered from the U.S. government.
Visit the County's website for the clinic schedule, locations and availability. You need to download and complete a form and bring it to the clinic. The clinics are in Mundelein, Gurnee, Round Lake Beach, Waukegan and North Chicago.

"We are asking that only people in the high-risk groups come to the clinics this week, however we are not turning anyone away," said Health Department spokeswoman Leslie Piotrowski. "We expect that soon there will be enough vaccine in Lake County for everyone who wants a shot to get one."

More than 430 local providers and facilities registered to receive the H1N1 vaccine in Lake County, but they don't have the vaccine yet. Lake Forest Hospital has a limited supply of seasonal flu vaccine and is hoping to have H1N1 vaccine for the public soon, according to a spokeswoman.

The CVS pharmacy on Western Avenue in Lake Forest is out of seasonal flu vaccine and does not know when H1N1 vaccine will arrive, according to a technician. The Walgreens on Rockland Road in Lake Bluff also has exhausted its supply of seasonal flu vaccine. When supplies of H1N1 vaccine do become available to pharmacies, the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff Walgreens stores will not have it, according to a pharmacy representative who said only Walgreens' 24-hour stores and Take Care Clinics will offer the vaccine. Those closest to the LF/LB area are in Deerfield and Libertyville.

Most of the flu cases going around Lake County are from the H1N1 virus. LFH's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Ankin said H1N1 is a sub-type of Influenza A and that at this time, 85% of people who show flu symptoms have H1N1, while the rest, 15%, have another type of Influenza A.

Tree Sale Helps Hockey Club Score

By Maureen Quaid, LFHS Hockey mom

Want to be part of a 35-year-old tradition in the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Community? You can by making a purchase from the Lake Forest High School Hockey Association’s 2009 Christmas Tree & Holiday Greens Sale. You can even pre-order your trees and greens now through Nov. 1 either from a player or online awww.scouthockey.com which has a complete online catalog with color pictures and descriptions of all the items available.

The Christmas Tree and Holiday Greens Sale has been a fund-raising tradition for the LFHS boys hockey team since 1974, which was the first season of hockey at the high school. A hockey mom known as Mrs. Metcalf, along with other team moms, worked to find a tree wholesaler and organized a schedule for workers (hockey players and parents) at the tree lot. The boys put up some colored lights and cranked the cassette player with Christmas music to get those driving by to stop and buy a tree. They even served hot chocolate to their patrons. For all their hard work, the players were able to reduce their fees by $5 for every tree they sold.

A full 35 years later, the tradition continues with players and parents still working the tree lot, which is on the tennis courts behind Deer Path Middle School (originally it was at the Gorton Community Center). The hockey team has even added a second location this year–Lake Forest Hardware–for walk-up sales. The players will even help you set up the tree in your homes for an additional fee.

The players still earn a commission to reduce their hockey fees, but it is a percentage of their individual sales rather than a set amount per tree.  The Lake Forest High School Hockey Team is a self-supporting club sport with no funding from the high school to pay for ice time, coaches, or uniforms, so this sale is the one way the team works at lowering the cost to play high school
