A River Runs Through It …

Do unpleasant circumstances ever force you to stop and take a moment? Here's one example:

By Adrienne Fawcett

The other day I got stuck waiting for a freight train on Rockland Road near the Lake Bluff Public Works building. I arrived just after the gates descended, and it was soon clear this was not going to be one of those quick little pauses on the road to wherever I was headed. The train stretched on and on and on; it had to have 100 cars, each one more crusted with grime and graffiti than the last. My initial reaction combined exasperation with self pity–or was it self loathing? "If only I hadn't checked my e-mail, I would have left the house sooner and missed this injustice!"

But rather than scream, I took a deep breath, looked around and noticed I was parked next to the Skokie River. Bare trees and snowy banks framed the river, and as I opened the window to snap a photo with my cell phone, a crow cawed loudly from its perch on a high branch. Dim memories surfaced, dating back to a college English class … a poem about snow, a crow and a writer's dark mood … I forgot about the train, stopped worrying about being late and began to enjoy the moment. When I got home, I googled "snow poems" and found this:

Dust of Snow … by Robert Frost (1923)

The way a crow

 Shook down on me

The dust of snow

 From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart

A change of mood

And saved some part

Of a day I had rued.

Stream at 176 3333

A quiet place amidst the hustle of life: the Skokie River Preserve in Lake Bluff. Photo taken with a cell phone from the window of a minivan.
