Ragdale Alum Signs With Disney

Ragdale Foundation has some fun news to share:

LAKE FOREST–The Ragdale Foundation is pleased to announce that Kat Falls, a Ragdale alumna and author of the new book Dark Life, recently optioned her book with Disney. Her book will be made into a film through a partnership with Disney, Gotham Group, the filmmakers behind The Spiderwick Chronicles and director Robert Zemeckis (The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol).

Ms. Falls was recently in residency at Ragdale working on the sequel, as yet unnamed, to Dark Life.

Dark Life is set in the near future when global warming has caused the oceans to rise and reduced America to half its former size. One of the characters, 16-year-old Ty and his family live on an ocean floor homestead. When outlaws attack the pioneer settlement, Ty teams up with a girl from the “Topside” who’s come sub-sea to search for her brother. Together they face dangerous sea creatures and venture into the frontier town’s rough underworld to discover the secret behind the outlaws’ eerie abilities.

Ragdale will celebrate Ms. Falls and her new book this Saturday, May 1 at the Book Stall at Chestnut Court (811 Elm Street, Winnetka). The book is being released by Scholastic Press. She will read from her novel and discuss her career and work. A book signing will follow. For more information, contact the Book Stall at 847.446.8880.

LF Designer Wins Top Gorton Honor

By Mary Kelly, communications manager for Gorton

Maria Hansen of Lake Forest was awarded the first-ever Gorton Diamond Designer Award during an evening of fashion and dancing sponsored by the Friends of Gorton at Lake Forest Sports Cars in Lake Bluff on Friday, April 23.

Ms. Hansen was one of several independent designers who had been invited to showcase their best spring 2010 efforts at Diamonds, Designers and Dancing. She presented a colorful collection of evening dresses, along with a special dress dedicated to Diane Zeller, a dear friend of hers who lost her battle to cancer.

Ms. Hansen, who is also an artist, credited one of her former professors at Lake Forest College, Martina Nehrling, with her success. “She was such an inspiration to me,” said Ms. Hansen. “I have to thank her for her faith in me.”

Following a cocktail and hors d’oeuvres reception, more than 250 guests from Chicago and the surrounding suburbs were treated to the fashion show. The evening also included live and silent auctions, a putting green contest, music by the Lake Forest High School Jazz Band and guest dancing.

“This was by no means just a Lake Forest event,” said Kendelle Cornette, Friends of Gorton member and Fashion Show Chair. “People came from all over. We (The Friends of Gorton) would like to make this an annual event where we can showcase the talents of local independent designers while we support Gorton Center.”

The Friends of Gorton’s next event will be its 37th Annual Gala, Small Dance for a Big Cause, to be held at a private estate in Lake Forest on June 26.

The Friends of Gorton organization manages fundraising events to support Gorton Center’s mission to enrich lives through cultural arts, education, and charitable services. In addition to its own performing arts and educational programs, Gorton Center welcomes 100+ charitable organizations annually for meetings, events and fundraisers. Gorton is located at 400 East Illinois Road in Lake Forest. For more information on Gorton Center or Friends of Gorton programs, please visit www.gortoncenter.org or call 847-234-6060.

PASTA To Stage ‘Joseph’

The following is a news release from the Gorton Community Center

The Gorton Community Center will again offer a summer theatre camp called PASTA, or “Performing Arts Summer Theatre Academy.” This year’s production is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

“We are very excited to have the opportunity to stage Joseph,” said Tom Beck, PASTA camp director. “There were restrictions placed on producing the play due to national theatre companies touring with the show. Once those restrictions were lifted, we quickly received permission to do the musical. This is going to be an exciting summer for PASTA.”

Mr. Beck described Joseph and the Amazing Techicolor Dreamcoat as a high-energy play with many different styles of music. “This makes it challenging and fun,” he said. “There are a variety of great characters for the young actors to play from Joseph to his father Jacob, the jealous brothers and their wives to the Elvis–style pharaoh. The pharaoh truly steals the show.”

In its sixth year at Gorton, PASTA is a comprehensive, performance-based theatre arts camp through which participants experience many aspects of acting, singing, dancing, improv, tech, costume design and set design with an end-of-session production for families and friends. All ages will develop a multitude of theatre and life skills as they act and work together under Golden Apple Award-winning teacher Tom Beck.

“PASTA is about learning and growing as a person as well as a performer,” said Mr. Beck.
Music director for Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat is Elaine Ellis, and Sue R. Beck will be the costume and set designer.

PASTA camp is open to ages seven through 17. Students will receive a Joseph T-shirt, daily snacks and drinks, and two complimentary tickets to a performance. PASTA runs from June 21 to July 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. Performances will be on July 17 and 18 in the Gorton auditorium.
For more information or to register, call 847-234-6060 or visit www.gortoncenter.org.

440 East Wisconsin Avenue: Restoration
Laura and Fred Fellows
Landscape Restoration: Rocco Fiore & Sons

This Howard Van Doren Shaw house was built in 1922 as a summer residence for J. O. Hinckley. In 2007 Laura and Fred Fellows purchased the property. Original materials were meticulously researched and replaced in kind. Mercury glass window panes, no longer available here, were imported from England. The home’s exterior sand finish stucco was carefully repaired but not washed lest the near century old patina be lost. The focal point of the restoration is a sunken English garden and patio. Set below two massive elms, the decaying bluestone garden and patio surfaces were removed, cement repoured and stone reset. A fountain, which had not operated in years, was rebuilt and a bronze statue of a playful girl skips atop the bubbling water.

797 Oakwood Avenue: Rehabilitation
Lynn and James Engelland
Architect: Lake Forest Landmark Development

This residence, which is sited on property that was captioned as the Devilo Holt subdivision, was built about 1895. The original owner of [...]

Time To Junk It

Is your home getting clogged with old televisions, computers, VCRs and other things you once plugged in but now never use? Take your old electronics to the Electronic Recycling Event on Saturday, May 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lake Bluff Middle School. It takes place in the west parking lot and is hosted by LBMS, MACypher/ Business & Home Computing Solutions and the St. Laidore Foundation.

If you’re a LB resident and you can’t make it to the Recycling Event on Saturday, you can deliver your old computers and other electronics to the Public Works Facility. Last year, the Village and SWALCO collected approximately 4.5 tons of electronics equipment.

After you’ve relieved your home of old electronics, it’s time to move onto that ratty sofa in the basement and other junk that’s too big to stuff in your trash can. Lake Bluff’s semi-annual collection is next week. The pick-up schedule is determined by regular collection dates:

  • Monday refuse collection is scheduled for Wednesday, May 5
  • Tuesday refuse collection will take place on Wednesday, May 12

Just haul your junk to the curb no earlier than 4 p.m. the day before your scheduled pick-up time. Call Groot at 877-404-7668 for more info. Or visit www.lakebluff.org for a list of items that don’t qualify for the collection–such as household chemical waste. To find out how to get rid of that, contact the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (SWALCO) at 847-336-9340.
