Parked Cars Filched In Lake Forest

Thieves entered nearly a dozen parked vehicles during three crime sprees that took place mostly on the east side of Lake Forest during the middle of the week between Jan. 1 and Jan. 18.

A common denominator to the incidents is that all the vehicles were parked outside of garages and were unlocked. Several items were stolen, including:

  • Garmin “Nuvi” GPS and an older iPod
  • mounted Phillips DVD player/TV
  • iPhone 3, Garmin GPS, $10 USC change
  • old silver iPod, Cannon Sureshot
  • ransacked, reg and insurance cards
  • $6 USC
  • backpack, train pass
  • $5 USC in change

Additionally, three vehicles were ransacked but nothing was taken.

“The Lake Forest Police Department requests residents remove valuables from their vehicles and secure them by locking doors and or securing them in a garage,” said Glenn Burmeister, deputy chief of the LFPD.

How To Make A Gloomy Day Get Better

By Adrienne Fawcett

Thursday was a dreary morning. The clouds were grey. The slush was grey. Even the snowflakes that started out white were grey by the time they landed on my minivan, which is, of course, grey.

Grey, grey, grey.

What to do? When weather-related gloominess strikes, there are two things that always cheer me up: comfort food and friendly people. So on a very wintery January morning, I went to downtown Lake Bluff and asked restaurant owners and staff what comfort foods they like to serve on a gloomy day.

An advance warning: I am a novice with the video camera.

Photos of Diane Rath’s artwork from her website, www.dianerath.com

Diane Rath is a woman of many talents. She’s an internationally known artist who specializes in the classical style. She’s a sought-after teacher of painting classes in Lake Forest. She leads workshops throughout the Midwest, Mexico and France. She’s a frequent presence at local art shows. And she’s a mom.

She also has many friends, and they’re rushing to her assistance at a very challenging time. On Jan. 1, Ms. Rath was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer. After she was admitted to the hospital, more tests revealed the cancer had traveled throughout her organs and that she’s seriously ill … and seriously fighting for her life.

To raise money for her treatment and to celebrate her artwork, Ms. Rath’s friends at Artists on the Bluff are hosting a benefit at the Lake Bluff Train Station Gallery on Saturday, Jan. 29, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. They are expecting a very large crowd of friends and admirers. Dozens of Ms. Rath’s paintings will be on display and available for purchase, and what’s not sold on Saturday will remain on exhibit (and for sale) for several weeks. The community is invited to attend. Refreshments will be served.

The Station Gallery is located at 600 N. Sheridan Road across from the business district of Lake Bluff. To learn more about Diane, visit her website at www.dianerath.com, or check out www.peoniesfordianerath.com

10 Years Of Margo Moreland 3 on 3

This Sunday is the 10th annual Margo Moreland 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament & Carnival. That’s 10 years of moon jumps, balloonists, games, prizes and intense competition in the Lake Forest High School field house—that and $300,000 donated to therapeutic treatments and equipment for people with cerebral palsy.

Can you help out with donations for the live auction? Sports-related items are much needed.

Kraig and Jennifer Moreland started the 3 on 3 Tournament to raise money for conductive education, a holistic therapy that has benefited their daughter, Margo, who has cerebral palsy. (Click here to read a story about the Morelands in the GazeboNews archives).

Each year, the 3 on 3 Tournament is a big event for the many children and parents involved in Mr. Moreland’s New Vision Athletics program. Last year’s tournament and carnival attracted more than 300 moms, dads, kids and NVA alumni.

As always, you get a free T-shirt and 10 tickets for $25, and you can purchase additional tickets to play even more games.

The event is Sunday, Jan. 30, at the LFHS Field House. Tournament is from noon to 5 p.m. and the carnival is from 1 to 4 p.m.

Future Scoping With Sandy Lincoln

By Adrienne Fawcett

The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce invites you the future.

Your host will be Sandy Lincoln, an investment advisor from Lake Forest who is a frequent guest on CNBC and Bloomberg and a contributor to the PBS Nightly Business Report. On Feb. 16 at Gorton, Mr. Lincoln will give a Dickensian presentation that reviews the year we’ve just been through, examines present-day issues, and forecasts what’s in store for the economy, markets, employment and housing in the next 12 to 24 months.

It’s a very interesting presentation–I know because he gave GazeboNews a preview this week. He draws on his experience as senior VP and investment Strategist for M&I Wealth Management, which manages more than $35 billion in investment assets. He explains, in layman’s terms, what brought the world economies down and what is–and needs to be–in place to get them back in expansion mode.

He goes beyond the U.S. and talks about the economies of China, Brazil, and Europe, and he explains what the global leaders did to staunch the economic bleeding. Many, many people in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff will appreciate hearing his forecast for employment, which he believes will improve in 2011.

The theme of the presentation is “Food For Thought,” and it’s sponsored by the Chamber with support from The Fresh Market, Lake Forest’s new specialty grocery store.

Mr. Lincoln’s presentation always draws a crowd, said Joanna Rolek, executive director of the Chamber. To attend, you must make reservations. Tickets cost $20 until Feb. 11 and are $25 after that. Here are the particulars:

Food For Thought by Sandy Lincoln
Wednesday, Feb. 16
6 to 8 p.m.
Gorton Community Center, 400 E. Illinois.

LFCD Wins Woodlands Math Jam

Lake Forest Country Day's math champs

The Woodlands Academy of the Sacred Heart Mathematics Department hosted a Mathalon for middle school girls on Saturday, January 22 on the Woodlands Academy campus. The Mathalon, part of Celebrating Women in Science, the school’s yearlong focus commemorating its new Science Center, challenged students to build skyscrapers from paper, utilize estimation skills, and recreate distance vs. time graphs using CBR motion detectors in conjunction with graphing calculators.

Awards were given to the top three finishers at the event’s conclusion. Lake Forest Country Day School took First Place, Saints Faith, Hope & Charity of Winnetka earned Second Place, and Lake Bluff Middle School came in Third.
Woodlands hosted this event to encourage young girls to pursue studies in Mathematics. The opportunity also gave students the chance to compete against groups of their peers.
