Sunday’s weather was perfect for a picnic in the park, which worked out well for the annual FoodStock concert in Lake Bluff’s Village Green. The event raised funds and food for the Lake County C.O.O.L. Food Pantry. John Crowley was there with his camera and took some great photos. Friends of Lake Bluff Library Reaching Out

Submitted by Friends of Lake Bluff Library

Calling all creative, artistic people … and all those who don’t think they’re creative or artistic.

The Friends of the Lake Bluff Library (FOL) are having a fundraiser for the library renovation. We are inviting you to create unique bookends that will be donated to the FOL. These bookends will be raffled off on July 30th during the Lake Bluff Library Open House, celebrating the completion of the renovation.

Through generous donations to the FOL, more than $18,000 has been donated to the renovation and our goal is to raise another $6,000. All money raised by this raffle will go towards the library renovation. Your creative works may be delivered to the Library by July 16th for display. Any questions may be directed to the FOL at elaack@friendslblibrary.org.

The Bluffinia That Almost Wasn’t

By Adrienne Fawcett

Lake Bluff’s Bluffinia was at risk of cancellation this year until Lake Forest Bank & Trust and other local sponsors stepped in to sponsor the popular Sunday night concert series, which begins on July 10.

The Lake Bluff Park District, organizer of the concerts, was informed last March that Baytree National Bank & Trust Co. would not be involved this year. “Baytree was a good sponsor since 2004,” said Lake Bluff Park District Executive Director Ron Salski.  But the concert series is expensive–the Park District spends $9,500 for its portion of Bluffinia–and without a title sponsor the future of Bluffinia was at risk.

“After Baytree’s decision, staff informed the Board of concerns with funding. Due to the weather, economy and trends, our budgets are being challenged so staff was potentially recommending to cancel if we couldn’t find sponsors to offset costs.  Before any recommendation, staff wanted to work hard finding partners. I approached Lake Forest Bank and Trust immediately and they were delighted to be a part of Bluffinia which helped with making any recommendation.  However, it was important to obtain other sponsorships as Lake Forest Bank and Trust was able to fund a portion of the costs which was significant.”

Other sponsors include:

  • Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital
  • Lake Bluff Park District
  • Friends of Lake Bluff Park District Foundation

The concert series lineup is as follows:

July 10: Mr. Myers

July 17: 28 Days (variety)

July 24: Lisa Rene Band (pop and rock, ’70s and later)

July 31: Peter Oprisko (America’s best pop, jazz and standards)

Aug. 7: The Ragtops (Chicago’s favorite 50s and 60s oldies band)

Aug. 14: Billy Croft (country rock)

Aug. 21: Soda (classic rock today)

In a press release, the Park District said:

“In order to keep this event each year, sponsorships and donations are critical so if you are interested, please contact the Guest Service Desk on ways to donate. Your funds can be earmarked specifically towards the event and a tax deduction as the Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization.”

FoodStock Is On Sunday

It’s time for the annual FoodStock concert on the green, an outdoor concert featuring Blues Deluxe, Suede & Friends and The Class of ’68, along with several other talents who are donating their time for a worthy cause on June 26 from 3 till 7:30pm. All you need to do is show up, preferably with a donation of non-perishable food items or money (or both!), because the outdoor concert/picnic is a fund-raiser for Lake County’s C.O.O.L. food pantry.

Since January 2011, with 2 pantries located in Waukegan & Ingleside, the C.O.O.L. food pantries have provided over 158,340 meals to over 5,389 families. This year, as in the past two years, the difficult economic downturn has continued to force even more people into unemployment resulting in more people who are in dire need of assistance. At the same time, government and charitable grants for food pantries continue to be reduced or eliminated. NOW, MORE THAN EVER, WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Since its inception in 2005, the Foodstock concert event has donated over $67,000 and 7,400 pounds of food to the C.O.O.L. Food Pantry. Please consider attending this ‘Ravinia’-like event and have a great time while helping a very worthy cause and giving back to our community. Bring your chairs and blankets.

FoodStock is on June 26 from 3 to 7:30 p.m. at the Gazebo. Local food vendors like Bluffington’s and Best Wishes Ice Cream will be on hand with refreshments. Visit FoodStockonline.org for more information on the bands, the fund-raising and C.O.O.L.

Relay For Life Funds Fight Against Cancer

In these photos, John des Rosiers gives a few “training” tips to his friend Alex Mueller, owner of Fitness Together. The training session was a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society’s “Relay For Life” event, which takes place at Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital from 6 p.m. Saturday, June 25, to 6 a.m. Sunday, June 26.

My friend Ellen Humphrey is walking all night with her team The Rehab Racers (“Team R2″) from Northwestern Lake Forest Hospital to raise money because, as she puts it, who hasn’t been affected by cancer? As of Thursday mid-day she was just dollars away from reaching her fund-raising goal of $15,000—click on the following to learn more about her story and/or contribute: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?px=19826570&pg=personal&fr_id=30733&fl=en_US&et=OqgV8xeLbzqxTN_5GhWZJQ..&s_tafId=631316

Ellen’s family has been in cancer’s crosshair for years. Her mother, Judith, died at age 63 from melanoma, her mother-in-law Marjorie Humphrey died from lung cancer, many of her friends are battling breast cancer, and her husband, Will is battling a rare proliferative blood disease some doctors classify as blood cancer.

Ellen’s family and friends (and many others) are praying for a cure. In the meantime, Will is newly enrolled in a clinical trial for a new drug as part of a research trial at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. “So far, the drug is working very well and so we remain positive, focused and enjoying the moment,” she said. She and her family are very grateful to the medical researchers who are working to find treatments for cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s theme this year is “The Official Sponsor of Birthdays”. Here’s more info on Relay For Life from the local ACS chapter:

What is Relay For Life?

Relay For Life is a community-focused, overnight event to fight cancer. Teams and individuals raise funds, prior to and at the event, to help fight cancer and save lives. Highlights include area cancer survivors who unite to walk the first lap and are then joined by family, friends and co-workers who helped them through their battle with cancer; a Luminaria Ceremony, held after dark, to honor cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle against the disease; and the Fight Back Rally to encourage participants to take a stand in the cancer fight and let their voices be heard year-round. In addition, a variety of entertainment, games, great food and other activities will be going on throughout the night.

Where do I find information?
For information, contact Alicia Wren, your American Cancer Society Staff Partner, at 847-317-0025 ext.3 or alicia.wren@cancer.org. To learn more about the event, Luminaria, Survivors Lap, and registration, visit www.relayforlifelakeforest.com.

In Illinois, 175 people a day are diagnosed with cancer. Join the fight for a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Storm Update From Lake Forest

This information comes from the City of Lake Forest on Thursday morning

1. As of 9 a.m. on June 23, approximately 2,406 homes in Lake Forest are without power. For estimated restore times, please call ComEd at 1-800-334-7661. Also, visit www.comed.com.

2. City crews have been removing trees blocking streets and public right-of-ways (including parkways and sidewalks). Any trees or large limbs that are down on private property and too large to be moved to the parkway must be removed by a private contractor unless the tree was on City property and fell onto private property or power lines. Tree branches no larger than 6
inches in diameter and 4 feet in length will continue to be accepted at the curb at no charge through Tuesday, June 28. Any trees or limbs that have fallen onto power lines must be removed by ComEd. Do not approach these power lines as they are live and extremely dangerous.

3. If you wish to bring material to the Compost Center this weekend (open Saturdays, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sundays, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.), branches must be no larger than 6 inches in diameter and 4 feet in length. As a reminder, residents must have a vehicle sticker and all Compost Center rules will continue to be in effect.

4. During this recovery period and until electricity is restored, temporary generators have been approved for use.

5. Currently, several businesses and buildings are without power, including the Recreation Center, Fitness Center, CROYA, Gorton and Deerpath Golf Course. Please call any public place ahead of time to confirm that there is power.

Please continue to check the City’s website for updates. If you need assistance with tree debris removal, please contact the Public Works department at: 847.810.3542 or miklovid@cityoflakeforest.com.
