The Sting Of Late Summer …

Ouch! ... Photo courtesy of WikiCommons--http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sting_of_Queen_Wasp.jpg

By Adrienne Fawcett

There are five people in my immediate family and only one of us gets stung by bees on a fairly regular basis. Some bee-whisperers would say bees are attracted to my daughter because they “smell her fear,” which I suppose is possible because after a dozen or so stings on her arms, legs, hands and face, she’s not too keen on bees. I think the most likely reason is that she spends more time outdoors than the rest of us, playing soccer, building forts, climbing trees, and exploring the ravines. Whatever the cause of the bee attraction, in the past two years she started developing a scary reaction to being stung–she would faint, no matter whether the sting came from a wasp, hornet, yellow jacket or honey bee. Fainting is not considered a common allergic reaction to insect stings, but I’ve written “possible bee allergy” on too many health forms. What’s a school nurse or a camp counselor supposed to do with that information if my daughter faints from a sting? So this past June, before our daughter went to sleep-away camp for two weeks, we had her tested for bee venom allergies by an allergist.

This is not a simple test and I don’t recommend doing it unless you need to (which I feel we did). But we were not well prepared–we were told it would be “just one shot”, but it was more like 13 shots, requiring a three-hour visit to the allergist’s office. And never mind that they were more like pricks than shots. A prick is a shot is a sting–it’s all the same to a child who’s afraid of bee stings! It didn’t help that when we walked into the waiting room, a little girl was sitting alone in a chair, holding a bandage to her upper arm and crying “it hurts! it hurts! it hurts!”

Let us not dwell on what went on over the following three hours.

In the end, we learned that my daughter does not have a bee allergy, which was valuable information and I don’t regret having her take the test. After a quick stop at Jamba Juice, all was well.

It so happens that bee allergies are actually quite rare–some beekeeper websites say “less than 1% of [...]

Maybe Not Your Grandma’s Jewelry

Submitted by the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Artisan Guild

Upon viewing artist Karen Dailey’s free-form, wire-wrapped jewelry pieces, one would never guess that there is a history embedded within each piece.

As Karen pursued the art of wire wrapping, she realized that many of her friends had old jewelry pieces with beautiful stones that could be recycled and re-worked into her contemporary jewelry designs. After collecting sacks of “grandma’s jewelry” from her friends, Karen “mined” these beautiful stones from the old pieces and now incorporates them into her jewelry creations–giving these stones a second life while creating beautiful, one-of-a-kind rings, pendants, and brooches.

But that’s not all. Karen’s first love is painting, which she has been doing for nine years and is mostly self-taught. Her first watercolor painting was from a veranda in Bellagio, Lake Como, Italy, where she painted a series of buildings. Little did she know that she would be renting an apartment in one of those buildings for many years to come as she frequently returned to Bellagio. Karen explained about her painting and wirework, “Due to a shoulder injury, I had to leave large oil painting projects and focus on smaller watercolor paintings. I paint in my lap, using a small bottle of water and a tiny paint palette to produce notecards and small pictures. The wire working evolved as another artform which does not put extra stress on my shoulder.”

Karen’s beautiful watercolor paintings and jewelry pieces will be on display at the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Artisan Guild Fall Show on September 4 and 5 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with parking in the Lake Forest Bank and Trust parking lot.

Karen does commission work, using your old jewelry as well as creating watercolor cards, wine glasses, etc., from a picture of your house and gardens. Don’t miss her booth at the show!
