Foresters Beat Winning Streak With 15th Win

With the help of all 17 players on the Lake Forest College Men’s Basketball roster, forward Nathan Bateman’s philosophy about limitless possibilities led the team to break its historical winning streak of 14, which was set in the 1914-15 and 1915-16 seasons.

The team beat Illinois College on its turf Jan. 25, 71 to 47. The top three shooters were sophomore guard James Stack, senior post player Travis Clark, and forward Drew Grennell.

The Foresters got off to an inauspicious start to the 2011-12 season when several players were injured, but that didn’t slow down the team.

“Injuries are unfortunately apart of the game and with the exception of one, all our guys have battled back to recover from their early injuries.” said Clark.

The team’s track record started off the same way as the 1914-15 season by also losing its first game, which was against Edgewood (61-54). The 2011-12 season tied with the winning streak record on Saturday, January 21, 2012 against Ripon College (83-75).

On Wednesday night the team took a five-hour bus ride to Illinois College to overcome the winning streak.

“Yesterday was the first time I had heard about the records, so I had no idea. We have set no goals, which leave our possibilities to achieve limitless,” said Bateman.

Stack attempted six shots and succeeded in making five. In Stack’s 23 minutes of total playing time he scored 14 points, of which four of the five shots were three pointers. Stack also had three assists and two steals.

In Clark’s 17 minutes of total playing time he scored a total of 13 points in addition to three assists and one steal.

In Grennell’s 23 minutes of total playing time he scored a total of 11 points and had six rebounds.

“It’s exciting for sure,” said Clark after the game. “It was a good team win for us, but we got to keep rolling through one game at a time.”

What is the key to their success?

According to Bateman, “The most important factor is that we are a veteran team that knows what disappointment feels like. We have seven seniors that know what regret feels like and do not want to have any in our final season. We also have had numerous underclassmen step up and become vital members of this team’s success.”

What Bateman is referring to is the team’s past volatile record from 2008-2011. The 2008-09 season had seven wins and 16 losses, and the team came in seventh for the Midwest Conference with six wins and 10 losses. The 2009-10 season had 14 wins and 10 losses, and it came in second for the Midwest Conference with 12 wins and four losses. The 2010-2011 season had 12 wins and 11 losses, with the Foresters coming in fifth for the Midwest Conference with 10 wins and eight losses. No matter what their Midwest Conference standing is, there is still an achievement to be reached.

Though the end is in sight, Coach Chris Conger stated: “There is a lot of season left. We need to keep getting better every day. We have also really appreciated all the crowds lately. Hopefully the students can continue to be so great. It really helped propel us this weekend.”

DPM Sexting Update

By Adrienne Fawcett

District 67 School Board Vice President John Julian said the outside review by independent counsel Ronald Safer of the Deer Path Middle School sexting scandal
is complete and that it will be presented in the near future to the ad hoc sub-committee that’s charged with overseeing the investigation.

Mr. Safer is a managing partner for the law firm Schiff Hardin LLP and previously worked as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Illinois.

A public report will be made at next board meeting, Feb. 28, he said.

Previously, Mr. Julian said Mr. Safer is charged with three points:

1. Determine whether the district’s policies and procedures were followed.

2. Determine if the policies and procedures need to be revised, and recommendations made in that regard.

3. Determine whether there was any wrongdoing of the district’s handling of the John Steinert matter in 2009.

Meanwhile, the investigation into the Lake Forest Police Department’s handling of the scandal also is underway.

City of Lake Forest Manager Robert Kiely Jr. said the investigator has two final interviews to conduct in the next several days. An executive session briefing of the City Council is tentatively scheduled for Monday, Feb. 6.

When the city does get the investigator’s report, will it be made available to the public? Mr. Kiely said he can’t answer that until after the City Council has had a chance to hear and discuss the investigator’s report.

The city’s independent investigation is being conducted by Leigh Jeter, counsel with the law firm of Clark Baird Smith, LLP, which specializes in labor and employment law. Ms. Jeter is not a resident of Lake Forest or Lake Bluff.

NATO, G-8 Summits Bump LFHS Prom

News from Lake Forest High School:

Due to the announcement that both NATO and G-8 summits will be held in Chicago the weekend of May 19 and the resultant citywide security concerns, we have rescheduled Prom from its original date of May 19 to May 12, 2012.

According to ABC News “It will be the first time since 1977 in London that two international summits will be held at the same time in the same city. Security experts say it will be a security challenge that no American city has ever had to face.”

As always the safety and security of our students is of the utmost importance. We thank our Prom Committee, vendors and you, our families, for accommodating this important change!

Lake Forest Man Is Pillar Of The Community

Local Resident Rebuilds Mellody Road Pillars

Jim Opsitnik is a Piillar of the Community in Lake Forest

Jim Opsitnik realized the entrance pillars to his neighborhood needed work--so he did it himself.

By A. J. Goldsmith

Deerpath Hill Estates is an award-winning Lake Forest subdivision south of Deerpath Road along Waukegan Road between Northcliff Way and King Muir Road. Standing at each side of the subdivision’s Mellody Road entrance from Waukegan Road are two, seven-foot-tall concrete- block pillars peaked by slate tiles.

In the 27 years that Jim Opsitnik has lived in Deerpath Hill Estates, he has often driven by these pillars. Last fall, he noticed that they looked tired.

One day he stopped and inspected the entrance’s pillars. Probing, he noted that the 75-year-old wood holding the slate roofing had rotted.  He frightened a mouse that had come through an opening and found a comfortable home.

In his current life, Jim is a successful contractor specializing in fixing older homes. He takes great pride in his work and his community.

He contacted officials of the City of Lake Forest and the State of Illinois to no avail. So, Jim took it upon himself to remedy the situation.

Jim had the old mortar analyzed and then made repairs using new mortar of the original formula. He also replaced the rotted wood.  Then, he called upon one of his specialized roofing subcontractors to provide and install multi-colored Vermont slate.

When he realized the entrance pillars to his neighborhood needed repair, Jim Opsitnik made sure the work got done

When he realized the slate tiles needed repair, Jim hired a tile subcontractor to do the work

A number of homes in Deerpath Hills were designed by architect Stanley Anderson from 1919 through the 1940s. Several of his homes have been posted in the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the Opsitniks live in Anderson’s own home on Verda Lane.

Architect Stanley Anderson was born in Lake Forest and graduated from Lake Forest College in 1916. He studied architecture at the University of Illinois and The Sorbonne.

It is thought that the entrance pillars at Waukegan and Melody roads as well as the grand entrance gates at Deerpath and King Muir roads were designed by Anderson.

The King Muir gates, too, are showing signs of age. Jim is hopeful that their restoration will be undertaken by the community in the near future. He is ready to assist in the project.

Public Health Group Awarded For Flu Site

By Lake County’s Health Department

The Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium (which includes the Lake County Health Department) has received a national honor for excellence in public health communication from the National Public Health Information Coalition.

The Consortium won a bronze award in the category: Websites and New Media, for the development of Illinois Pandemic Flu.org, a robust repository of information on public health crisis communications, working with the media and public during a flu pandemic, incorporating social media into communications plans and helping at-risk populations during a health emergency.

“We are extremely proud that the premier nationwide voice of public health communication has recognized our work,” said Maureen McHugh, Consortium President and DuPage County Health Department Executive Director. “After all, public health is about preventing illness and injury, and that means educating people to help them understand and reduce their individual health risks.”

The site was originally created for public information officers, medical professionals and others who regularly communicate with the public during a public health emergency such as pandemic flu. However, the resource provides valuable health information for the public at-large, including important information about seasonal flu and flu prevention as well as hundreds of resources from trusted sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, United States Health and Human Services and the World Health Organization.

Illinois Pandemic Flu was developed through a grant provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health. Illinois Pandemic Flu can be accessed at www.illinoispandemicflu.org or ilpanflu.org.

The Northern Illinois Public Health Consortium is a 501 (c)(4) membership organization of the public health departments that serve the counties of Cook, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, Will, and Winnebago, as well as the City of Chicago and Village of Skokie. Its mission is to promote and protect the health of the region through networking and collaborative action that raises public awareness, builds constituency and influences legislation and policies concerning public health issues affecting northern Illinois.

The National Public Health Information Coalition is the leading national organization for public health communication professionals. NPHIC’s ranks include public information officers, risk communicators and health educators at state, tribal and local health departments across the country. As the recognized voice of public health communication, NPHIC’s award program offers gold, silver and bronze awards in more than a dozen public health communication categories.

“As a recipient of a NPHIC award, your department has been designated by an independent panel of judges as among the year’s best in public health communication,” stated NPHIC President William Gerrish. “Congratulations on helping NPHIC pursue our mission to ‘make public health public.’”
